Back to School Letter Being Mailed Home 8/18

All Gateway families will be mailed a letter on Monday, August 18, 2014 containing important information regarding the 2014-15 school year. The letter will contain information including students’ homeroom assignments, transportation (bus) schedules, Kindergarten information, and free and reduced lunch information (CSE only).

This year, the letter will also contain IMPORTANT registration information for the District’s new parent communication service, iParent, which will replace Edline. iParent will allow families to access student information such as progress reports, report cards, and other important data.

If you have any questions, once you receive your letter in the mail, please direct all inquiries to your child’s school office. One of our staff members will be happy to assist you.

We are looking forward to welcoming our students back on August 25th for another year filled with rewarding learning experiences at Gateway.

Free Lunch/Breakfast at CSE

Gateway Food & Nutrition is pleased to inform you that Dr. Cleveland Steward Elementary School (CSE) is eligible for and implementing a new option available to schools participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs called the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for School Year 2014-2015. This Universal Lunch and School Breakfast Program will provide breakfast and lunch to all students at no charge regardless of their respective eligibility status.

The Universal Lunch and School Breakfast Program is a Federal Program awarded to schools with free and reduced lunch populations greater than 40%. Dr. Cleveland Steward Elementary (CSE) was the only building in the District that qualified at 62% free and reduced lunch. Support for this program is provided by the Federal Government, just like the free fruits and vegetables program that students at CSE enjoyed the past two years. Gateway School District is unable to roll the program out to other schools.

Please note that studies have shown that children who are not hungry perform better in school. By providing lunch to all CSE children at no charge, we are hoping to create a better learning environment for our CSE Students. This offering will only be available to those students attending CSE. The breakfasts and lunches that we serve follow U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines for healthy school meals.

If you have any questions about this new program please feel free to contact us at (412) 373-5776.

Rumor Has It
Sometimes, despite Gateway's best efforts to get accurate information out in a timely manner, misinformation about the district, its staff or students can circulate quickly. In an effort to make sure our families and communities have accurate information, the district has created this page which allows Gateway to address rumors and inaccuracies that residents may have heard through the grapevine. If there is a topic or rumor you are curious about, simply send us an email at and we'll answer your question and post the it on the website.

GHS Later School Start Time/Teen Sleep Information
Discussions on later school start times began at Gateway High School recently. Two high school committee meetings were held with our staff, administration, and other invitees including two school board members. Research was presented supporting these later school start times and concerns were raised by participants. Please see the research summary that follows and reference links. This information will be updated and added to our website as appropriate.
